Rosemary and Leno LaBianca met and fell in love while Leno was married to his childhood sweetheart - he left his family to marry Rosemary. And Rosemary brought her two children from a previous marriage into the family, Suzan and Frank.
Leno owned and operated his family's grocery business and he entered the marriage financially well-established. Rosemary by contract was virtually penniless, After first buying and living at the Walt Disney Los Feliz mansion - they sold it and moved to Leno's childhood home at 3311 Waverly Way, where Leno and Rosemary were murdered early on the morning of August 10, 1969.
Although it has been said that Manson picked the house and the LaBianca's randomly - it may not have been entirely randome.
Leno and Rosemary had driven back from a day trip to Lake Isabella with Suzan late on Saturday night, August 9th, arriving back to LA in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 10th - and had gotten back to Waverly Drive well after 1 am. And only after dropping Rosemary's daughter Suzan off at her apartment at 4616 Melrose Place (the inspiration for the Fox series "Melrose Place) that she shared with her boyfriend.
Leno and Rosemary had noticed many strange occurrences at the 3341 Waverly Ave house during the Summer of 1969. They would come home to find their dogs outside although they had left the dogs inside the house. Small things would be moved around or missing - to the extent that Rosemary had become particularly frightened and had even warned family to stay away from the house.
On Sunday afternoon, Rosemary's son Frank couldn't get a response at the house and called his older sister from a pay phone. Suzan immediately told Frank something had "happened" to their mother, and told him her boyfriend would meet him. Suzan's boyfriend, a known drug-dealer and Hell's Angels associate, then met Frank - without Suzan - and they found the bodies together. The Hell's Angels were frequent guests of the Manson family and Manson even recruited various members to live at the Span Ranch for extended periods at various times.
After the deaths, Leno's family was shocked to learn that virtually all of Leno's considerable wealth had been transferred to Rosemary, who had been working in a restaurant at the time of their marriage. Although Rosemary had a woman's clothing boutique during their marriage, her income was minimal relative to Leno's business. But Leno was effectively penniless at the time of his death, all of his considerable assets were owned by Rosemary individually, which meant her daughter Suzan and son Frank inherited all of the LaBianca fortune while Leno's children from his first marriage got nothing.
During the time when the estate was being settled, Suzan was credibly accused of making threatening calls to the home of Leno's ex-wife and children, discouraging them from contesting the estate settlement.
Patty Tate later accused Suzan of stalking her and her daughter, when Suzan enrolled her daughter at Patty's daughter's school and insinuated themselves into Patty's life without ever revealing their true identities. This was especially offensive to Patty Tate, because Suzan, at this time, had become romantically involved with Tex Watson - who led the Manson group in the Tate murders. And Suzan was working actively to get Tex paroled - and wanted the Tate family to stop opposing parole.
