Frano Selak (14 June 1929 – 30 November 2016) was a Croatian man who was well-known for his near-death experiences. Frano Selak has been called the world’s luckiest or unluckiest man. When Selak was riding a train through a chilly, rainy canyon in January 1962, the train veered off the tracks and crashed into a river, marking the beginning of Selak’s near-death experiences. Selak was saved by an unknown person while the other 17 passengers perished in the water. Selak experienced hypothermia and a broken arm.
Selak won the lottery for €900,000 (US$1,110,000) (£702,920). Frano Selak married for the fifth time at the time of his victory. While Selak used his winnings to buy two houses and a boat, Frano Selak decided to give away the majority of the remaining money to relatives and friends in 2010 after deciding to live a frugal lifestyle.None of Selak’s near-death experiences have ever been independently verified, and some of his accounts of them were inconsistent. He passed away at the age of 87.
Frano Selak’s cause of death
The following year, while taking his first and only flight, Frano Selak was blown out of the aircraft and landed in a haystack; the aircraft crashed, killing 19 people. Three years later, in 1966, he was riding in a bus when it skidded off the road and into a river, killing four passengers. Selak swam to shore, a few cuts and bruises on his body.
