Wherever you turn in wrestling right now, there's drama. Since the industry is built on dramatic moments and matches, that would usually be a good thing, but maybe not so much right now. WWE has been dealing with more backstage drama than at any other point in its history, and over the course of the last few days, AEW appears to be tackling the same thing.
CM Punk And Hangman Page
The same thing, but in a very different way. There will be no turnover when it comes to who runs the company, but some of AEW's biggest stars appear to be butting heads in a way that isn't good for the present or the future of the company. CM Punk is back from injury, and even though Jon Moxley is the man in his crosshairs, he confronted Hangman Page.
It has come to light since then that not only was the Punk/Page confrontation not planned, but there was worry internally that the AEW Champion wouldn't show up to Dynamite at all this week. According to the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this whole situation stems from AEW almost cutting Colt Cabana from the roster earlier this year.
Colt Cabana Was Almost Cut
Cabana was seemingly removed from the Dark Order and apparently stopped coming to AEW's TV tapings. That was reportedly followed up by the belief Khan wouldn't be renewing Cabana's deal. Internal backlash to that coupled with the acquisition of ROH turned things around, and now Cabana is actively involved with whatever is going on with the recently acquired brand.
As for why Cabana could unwittingly be the root of all these problems, he and Punk fell out following the tell-all podcast the latter did on the former's podcast about his WWE departure. That resulted in all sorts of legal proceedings and one big mess that meant the former best friends no longer even speak to each other. It would make sense that Khan would be willing to do almost anything to keep Punk happy, but that willingness may have caused some pretty major issues.
